FAQ’s - Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is lime bloomefflorescence? This is a temporary natural phenomenon that can occur to a varying extent on all forms of concrete.
  • What methods can be used to clean cast stone? The main methods used are water washing, mechanical cleaning and/or air abrasives.
  • What mortar mix should be used? Dependant upon the exposure conditions; in a severe exposure a 1:1:6 cement : lime:sand mix is recommended and in moderate exposure 1:2:9.
  • Can bed joint reinforcement be used in conjunction? Yes
  • In what situation can would bed joint reinforcement be used? Reinforcement between units on large stone areas, reducing loadings over openings.
  • What are and can movement joints be incorporated? Movement joints are required in long runs of stone to allow for expansion between different materials and can normally be incorporated without difficulty.

  • What is the fire classification of cast stone? Cast stone is regarded as non-combustible
  • What are the dimensional tolerances of cast stone? Dimensions of cast stone are as BS1217.
  • How should cast stone be stored on site? See our handling and storage instructions in our brochure Understanding Cast Stone .
  • Can cast stone be used below DPC? Yes
  • Can cast stone be cut on site? Yes with proprietory cutting discs.
  • What fixings can be used in conjunction with cast stone? Most standard proprietory fixings can be used, please contact our Technical staff to discuss.
  • Is it possible to stack bond cast stone? Yes
